Health Insurance Premium Prediction System

Shield Insurance faced challenges in accurately predicting health insurance premiums for diverse customer segments. The need was to build an end-to-end ML system that could deliver accurate, segment-specific premium predictions while ensuring model stability and business applicability.

Insurance plan, genetic risk, and risk score are the top predictors driving premium estimates in Linear Regression.

Extreme prediction errors are concentrated in the younger age group, highlighting model underperformance.

Project Details

Developed an end-to-end ML system for Shield Insurance using 50,000 simulated records to predict health insurance premiums. Focused on data preparation, cleaning, feature engineering, and EDA to ensure reliable inputs. Baseline models (Linear Regression, XGBoost) achieved 95–98% accuracy overall but underperformed for the 18–25 age group. Applied a segmentation approach: Linear Regression with genetic risk factors for 18–25 (98.8% accuracy) and XGBoost for others (99.7% accuracy). Addressed multi-collinearity using Variance Inflation Factor (VIF) to improve stability. Deployed a Streamlit prototype app for real-time premium prediction, serving as proof of evidence and enabling business users to validate outputs instantly.
