How to use this self-assessment
1
Answer for how you teach today, not how you hope to teach.
2

DIMENSION 1 OF 4
Subject Mastery
Do you know your subject deeply enough to teach it?
1.I can explain the “why” behind every concept I teach, not just the “how”.
2.I have real proof of work (projects, industry experience) in the subject I want to teach.
3.When a learner asks an unexpected question, I can reason from first principles instead of memory.
4.I have learned something new in my subject in the last 90 days.
DIMENSION 2 OF 4
Learner Empathy
Can you feel where the learner is stuck — and meet them there?
5.I can usually tell where a learner is stuck before they finish explaining their doubt.
6.I clearly remember what it felt like to NOT know my subject.
7.I treat no question as a stupid question — ever.
8.When I see confused faces, I change my explanation instead of pushing on.
DIMENSION 3 OF 4
Instructional Design
One idea per moment, the right sequence, the right example.
9.I break concepts into bite-sized chunks and sequence them deliberately.
10.I regularly use analogies from everyday life to introduce new ideas.
11.I start from a pain point or problem — never from the tool or the definition.
12.My slides carry one idea at a time, with minimal text and big visuals.
DIMENSION 4 OF 4
Delivery & Presence
Pace, clarity, energy — on camera and live.
13.I speak slowly and clearly, without cutting or swallowing words.
14.I plan an engagement moment (poll, quiz, question) roughly every 10 minutes.
15.I stay calm and confident when a demo fails or the tech breaks.
16.My setup is reliable: good mic (with backup), clean screen, stable internet.

Answer all 16 statements to see your biggest growth lever.
Honest mirror first. Better teacher next.
One thing we believe at Codebasics: subject mastery is necessary but not sufficient — most experts already have it. Learner empathy is the rarest skill, and it is the one we obsess over.
Your next step — the Baseline Video: pick the given topic (e.g. Harness Engineering or “What is Mom’s Test?”), build a short presentation, record yourself teaching it BEFORE watching further chapters, and upload it on the LMS. You will rebuild and re-record the same topic in Chapter 6 (Stage 1).
